About Cranky’s Game

A small sanctuary, built by hand.

How it started

Cranky’s Game was inspired by a real turtle named Cranky — a rescued three-legged Eastern box turtle who earned his name because he hissed. A lot. One day, while Cranky was hissing, our daughter waited for just the right moment and slipped a slice of pear into his open mouth. He ate it, loved it, and apparently learned something from the experience: after that, Cranky would hiss when he wanted more pears.

That stubborn little turtle became the inspiration for a browser game built for our family, one evening at a time — a calm place to care for box turtles, grow a sanctuary, and go on gentle adventures together. It grew from there, one feature and one bug fix at a time, into something worth sharing more widely.

It started with Cranky, a pear, and a family project — and it’s growing carefully, one release at a time.

Why box turtles

Box turtles aren’t flashy. They’re patient, a little stubborn, and they take real care to look after — which felt like the right spirit for a game about kindness and steady effort rather than speed or competition. There’s no rush here. A turtle that’s well cared for just keeps growing.

What we’re building toward

Cranky’s Game now combines the sanctuary, adventures, achievements, companions, and turtle family with online progress that follows the player across devices. Friends, visits, events, the Post Office, gifts, and friend chat are built around parent controls, blocking/reporting, and deliberately limited player discovery.

Our approach to safety

This is a family game, built with a family’s care. Every decision about what to add next gets weighed against one question: would we want our own kids using this? Parents stay in control of their kids’ profiles, there’s no advertising, and nothing about how the game is built depends on holding anyone’s attention longer than they want to give it.
